Our Mission and Vision

History

The Keahole Center for Sustainability (KCS) is a private nonprofit organization located within the Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology Park (HOST Park). Formerly known as Friends of NELHA (FON), we rebranded earlier this year to reflect our broader mission. For over 20 years, we have served as the public connection to the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA), focusing on outreach and education. Our updated mission promotes sustainable practices through the responsible use of sunlight and seawater for a sustainable future in Hawaii

Role We Serve

We act as a liaison between the public and HOST/NELHA, facilitating economic development in West Hawaii. Our goal is to elevate awareness of renewable energy innovations and engage our community in ocean sciences and technology, specializing in educational and cultural experiences. NELHA is one of only two locations globally with a deep seawater pipeline and operational Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) facilities, addressing critical needs for food, clean energy, and fresh water.

Value We Provide

Our support is crucial for students and educators, fostering STEM education and enhancing science literacy. With only 11% of Hawaii students meeting STEM benchmarks, our programs offer essential exposure and experiences. We address the County of Hawaii's sustainability goals through initiatives aligned with the Aloha+ Challenge, focusing on clean energy, local food production, and sustainable communities.

Current Operations and Future Plans

We offer weekly tours that highlight the significance of HOST Park and the progress towards Aloha+ Challenge goals. Our programs include hands-on activities such as beach park care, plant germination for conservation, and virtual educational resources. We have also started guided natural history tours of Keahole Point to enhance community engagement.

Sister City Relationship with Kumejima, Okinawa

KCS has maintained a Sister City relationship with Kumejima, assisting in hosting representatives and supporting clean energy partnerships over the past decade.

Committed to showcasing Hawaii's sustainability achievements, KCS operates on limited funding from tours, workshops, and private donations. Our potential to support the County's sustainability goals is significant, especially in workforce development and education, provided we receive the necessary support.
